Ag machinery repairs without the wait

Agricultural machinery is expensive, it’s a tool of trade and it can’t stay unrepaired for long periods of time. There’s little time to waste waiting for parts to come from overseas or be shipped around this vast country to the rural area where the machinery has broken down.

By its very nature agricultural machinery is ‘out in the sticks’, not near town or city and changes to environment like impending weather can mean that waiting for that ideal repair part may not be appropriate. That’s where JB Weld comes into play.

JB Weld has a host of products that can take the stress off that sudden repair situation and the fact that these products can be stored easily on a shelf taking up little space makes them even more attractive to the agricultural workshop. As an example, here are four products that should be on the shelf in every ag workshop and in the toolbox of every mechanic: KwikWeld, WaterWeld, Twin Tube and Steel Stik.

JB Weld KwikWeld is the fast setting version of the original JB Weld two-part epoxy cold weld system – JB Weld Twin Tube. KwikWeld is what’s needed when you don’t have time to wait. It is rated at 2424 psi and sets in 6 minutes; fully cures within 4-6 hours, so you can get to work much faster without an overnight wait.

JB Weld KwikWeld is good for up to 148ºC and provides strong, lasting repairs to metal and multiple other surfaces. After curing, it forms a permanent bond and can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded and drilled.

J-B Weld Twin Tube is the original two-part epoxy system that provides strong, lasting repairs to metal and multiple surfaces.  Mixed at a ratio of 1:1, it forms a permanent bond and can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded and drilled after curing.

At room temperature, it sets in 4-6 hours to a dark grey colour. A full cure is reached in 15-24 hours. Allow 4-6 hours before handling and 15 hours (minimum) before putting object back in use. J-B Weld Twin Tube has a tensile strength of 3960 PSI and it can withstand temperatures up to 287ºC when fully cured.

With both KwikWeld and Twin Tube Weld you must first carefully clean the surface area of dirt, grease, oil, paint, or loose debris with a detergent or degreaser, then roughen the surface with file or coarse sandpaper to provide the best bond.

Squeeze equal parts from each tube onto a disposable surface and mix it thoroughly then apply it with an appropriate tool in an even coat, weld bead or extruded shape as needed.

JB Weld WaterWeld will plug or seal leaks and patch holes and cracks in almost anything. Ideal for repairing plumbing, fuel tanks, potable water tanks and works with materials such as fibreglass, PVC plastic, copper, brass, iron and aluminium. It is resistant to water, oil, gas, diesel, hydraulic fluids and most chemicals. Plus, it will also set under water.

After curing, it can be drilled, tapped, filed, sanded and painted.

WaterWeld has a set time of 15-25 minutes and sets hard in one hour, it cures to an off-white colour, is rated at a tensile strength of 900 PSI and will withstand temperatures up to 148ºC.

Like most JB Weld products it is important to ensure that the surfaces are clean with no oil or grease smears. First remove the required amount of putty and knead it thoroughly with your fingers until it is a uniform colour then press it firmly on the repair surface. It will set in 25 minutes and cure in one hour to an off-white colour.

JB Weld SteelStik is a hand-mixable, steel-reinforced, non-rusting epoxy putty that quickly repairs or rebuilds anything made of metal. After mixing, it forms an industrial-strength polymer compound that can be moulded into shapes or used to build up, patch and repair steel components.

SteelStik sets in 3-5 minutes and after 60 minutes it can be drilled, tapped, machined, ground, filed and painted. It cures to a dark grey colour, is rated at a tensile strength of 900 PSI and will withstand temperatures up to 148ºC.
